The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority’s brand new online portal is on the fritz.
MedPortal went live Oct. 28 as Oklahoma’s official online licensing portal for medical marijuana patients, caregivers and businesses. But by Dec. 12, a little more than a month after launching the site, the state agency said technical issues were getting in the way of meeting license renewal deadlines.
“We understand the impact these issues may have on patients and businesses to complete required actions in a timely manner,” reads a statement from OMMA, the regulatory agency for Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program.
No one will be penalized for missing deadlines due to “technology issues outside their control,” the statement added.
Kim Ester is a medical marijuana patient in Tulsa. She agreed to speak with the Flyer under a pseudonym because of the stigma associated with marijuana use. Ester says the MedPortal issue has actually been an issue for several weeks.
In fact, OMMA first announced problems with the portal in a Nov. 14 statement, saying licensees were experiencing issues, but the agency expected those problems to be resolved within a week.
When Ester called OMMA last Wednesday, she was 80th in the queue — and she waited hours to speak to someone.
“The call wait time is two or three hours, so they’re obviously having hundreds of people calling every day,” Ester said.Tulsa Flyer emailed the OMMA media contact that same day inquiring about patients being unable to upload or save documents on the MedPortal. We did not hear back.
Ester says until the agency released their statement last week, OMMA had not been forthcoming as to how the portal’s issues could impact the renewal of her license, which expires at the end of the month.
“For me, it’s not the end of the world, but I just felt like they needed to explain what was going on,” Ester said.
Additionally, Ester says an OMMA receptionist told her application submissions and renewals cannot be processed in person — only through the online portal.
“This portal is the only way you can get your license issued or renewed,” Ester said.
For now, OMMA says they are working to resolve the issues.
“We have recently implemented automatic processes to speed up resolution for login/authentication issues. We have also dedicated more staff to assist in the call center and with contact form submissions,” reads OMMA’s latest statement.
